Full-Time Software Development Manager

Job Description

On the back of continued business expansion and growing revenue the company is increasing in scale and complexity and now needs a Software Development Manager to join our team and take ownership of development projects and software engineering teams, enhancing our platform and building new products and services.

This is a senior role within the technical organisation and will report to the Director of Software & Services based in Cork with close working relationship with our Architect and Product Owner in Cork, as well as our Asia Pacific team in Malaysia.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading by example and managing development decisions across the full range of Akari Software’s systems and development processes.

They will work hand-in-hand with the software developers, instilling a professional approach and leading decisions.

The candidate must be passionate about web architectures, knowledgeable in best practise for Enterprise Software as a Service in areas such as writing high performance code, security, design for scale and ease of maintenance.

Occasional travel may be required to our Malaysia offices, but this role is based in our Cork office.

Candidates must have the right to work in Ireland.

Responsibilities

    Hands-on management of development teams of 3-6 developers in single or multiple streams for project work, including driving stand-ups, planning, designing and implementing software solutions in our system taking product requirements as input. Teams can include members based in Ireland and/or Malaysia.
    Hands-on, day to day software development will be an element of this role but the successful candidate will be engaged in a balance of design, coding and tech team management
    Driving teams engaged in ongoing design/definition/implementation/refinement of the technology solutions for Akari’s platform
    On an on-going basis assess and optimise what we do against our overriding needs for reliability, robustness, low cost of ownership, performance and security
    Support a change agenda on an iterative basis to upgrade/improve our systems
    Monitoring best practice, both in the development best practise general and looking at our competitors’ offerings and benchmarking Akari against them
    Software developer line management
    To mentor product, developer and QA colleagues in best practices
    Run and participate in the Agile development methodology including stand-up meetings as needed
    Define metrics for software development at Akari that are useful and practical and look at how we can instrument what we do
    Assist with the resolution of day to day issues and queries relating to technology issues
    Identify the resource needs for the technology function and assist in building out the team

Candidate Profile and Key Skills

    Thorough hands-on experience of designing, developing and implementing world class ecommerce solutions for high volume transactional platforms
    Thorough knowledge of tech team management, SDLC (agile) and how to interact with technical and non-technical staff
    Strong people management skills – Highly motivated self-starter
    Comfortable engaging at a senior management and executive level
    Ability to attract, hire, manage and provide on-going motivation to a skilled technology team
    Ability to come up to speed quickly on our technology stack
    Overriding commitment to delivering excellent quality and communicating it across the organisation
    Experience with some/all of our technology stack – CFML, HTML/CSS/JS, node.js, MySQL, Oracle, MongoDB
    Experience with some/all of our developer and support tools (JIRA, Git/Bitbucket, Confluence, Teamwork.com)
    Experience with cloud hosting, continuous integration, test first / test driven development and infrastructure as code
    Experience working in an agile development environment with a geographically dispersed development team
    Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    Strong understanding of product life cycle and deliverables
    Bachelor’s degree or greater in an appropriate technical discipline
    Must be able to work on own initiative, owning the delivery of solutions
    Ability to prioritise and work to deadlines
    Must have excellent attention to detail, be persistent to get things done right, be highly organised and flexible and work well in collaboration with a young team
    Ideally we would like someone with 5+ years’ experience working in a senior role with hands on knowledge of the skills outlined above.
