Full-Time Senior Web Operations Engineer

Etsy – Posted by jchan Dublin, Dublin, Ireland

Job Description

The Etsy technical operations team is seeking a Web Operations Engineer to help build and maintain Etsy’s fast-growing infrastructure in Europe from our Dublin office. This role isn’t new for Etsy but this is a new role in our Dublin office where we are expanding our engineering team.

The Etsy Ops team is a dynamic group, answering calls for operational advice across the entire Etsy organization. We work tightly with all of the development groups to bring a “full-stack” perspective on how the application and infrastructure are working together, helping to provide availability and performance while still allowing for rapid deploys and agile engineering.

The team strives for situational awareness; we know that failure happens, and our goal isn’t to prevent it, but rather to be as nimble and thoughtful as possible in addressing it. Being nice is a requirement, yet so is speaking your mind. You will likely learn more about collaboration at Etsy than you have anywhere else. The current team is comprised of musicians, bow hunters, distance runners, aikido practitioners, and of course, cat fanciers.

About the Job

  • Build and maintain Etsy’s EU infrastructure, from bare metal to production including cloud based technologies such as AWS
  • Take part in a 24×7 on-call rotation for our EU entities
  • Support various engineering teams as a “designated ops” person, attending team meetings and advising in an operational capacity
  • Triage and address requests for ops assistance via the general ops ticket queue
  • Collaborate with the senior operations staff and assist with their project-based work
  • Tightly collaborate with development, product, community and customer care organizations
  • Maintain the technical infrastructure for business continuity plan (BCP)
  • Reports to the Director of Operations in Dublin

About You

  • Proficiency in building Linux systems, especially RHEL, CentOS, or Fedora and Ubuntu
  • Good understanding of Linux commands
  • Ability to write basic shell scripts
  • Experience with configuration management systems and concepts (Chef, Puppet, CFEngine, etc.)
  • Familiarity with revision control software, especially Git
  • Familiarity with cloud based services specifically within AWS
  • Experience with basic management of core operations systems such as, but not limited to, DNS, LDAP, and NTP
  • A solid understanding of web application architecture, including TCP/IP and HTTP
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

Nice to Have

  • Professional experience in a web application shop, especially in a “continuous deployment” environment
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages, particularly interpreted languages such as Ruby, Python, and PHP
  • Experience customizing or managing monitoring and graphing systems, such as Nagios, Ganglia, and Graphite
  • Familiarity with automated host provisioning tools
  • Experience with mission-critical databases, particularly MySQL and PostgreSQL
  • Familiarity with search platforms, such as ElasticSearch and Solr
  • Experience working with virtual machines or containers, such as KVM/QEMU, LXC, and VMware
  • An understanding of caching strategies at all layers
  • Experience with CDNs
  • Fluent in French language

What’s Next

If you’re interested in joining the team, please send us your resume. You won’t be surprised to hear, though, that we won’t consider it without a cover letter. Let us know how you fit the bill for each of our requirements above. Etsy is a place that values individuality and variety, so use your judgment and write to us in your own voice. If you have a presence on the web that we can easily access (Twitter, Facebook, rap sheet), contribute to an open source project, write a blog, or practice another craft besides designing beautiful, functional websites, that means something to us, we’d love to hear about it.
