MySQL Linux Java Developer/Administrator

Cartell is considered a small IT company, however, we handle over a million XML data requests per month for thousands of Irish and a growing number of European customers. We are developing intelligent algorithms to analyse bulk data assisting our customers make solid business decisions. We expect to double our business and quadruple our data processing in the next 16 months and to assist us with this growth we have identified an opening for a MySQL Linux and Java Developer/Administrator at our head office in Clane.

The sucessful applicant will have at least two years MySQL (or MariaDB) and Java experience and display familiarity with Linux/Unix platforms (we use Red Hat and Centos), Apache and Tomcat. You will understand the web and have some experience/interest in working with high availability environments.
Cartell has one of the largest vehicle databases in the country, (c.a. a billion records) which is ever expanding with new sources and applications added on a monthly basis. Our development team is building cutting edge products based on vehicle data that have worldwide application. We have many data sources and need to automate the sourcing, aggregation, quality, correction, integration, optimisation and storage of data. Lots of it.

You will be an open source advocate with an interest in cloud computing and automation, your input and research will be key in how we continue to grow. You will display autodidactic qualities and have the passion to present new technology and solutions to the team.

Clane is a lovely location for those tired of the big city rat race, it’s only 20 minutes from Lucan (Dublin) and there is no issue with traffic or parking. Blacknight are currently recruiting for a Senior Systems Engineer to expand the current team of Systems Engineers. This team is responsible for the design, deployment and maintenance of our hosting infrastructure, and for architecting dedicated customer solutions. Blacknight currently support an infrastructure of over 2000 servers and over 150,000 customers on a redundant core network, operating out of two data centres.

The relevant applicant will ideally have a background in a hosting environment, with very strong networking, systems administrator and virtualisation technologies and experience in a large scale environment. An in–depth knowledge of either a Linux or Windows infrastructure and a good working knowledge of the other technologies, in a high-availability 24/7 environment is essential, as is the ability to plan, schedule and work to minimise service outages.

Job Description

* Ensure that all Blacknight services run optimally. Continuously monitor performance against published SLA targets.

* Responsibility for Windows and/or Linux based service delivery systems, such as shared & dedicated IIS and SQL hosting across multiple data centres.

* Deployment of enterprise class solutions such as clustering and load balancing high availability services on either a Windows or Linux platform

* Design, build and maintain multi-server multi-site distributed computer system using Hyper-V, hosted Microsoft Exchange and Active Directory

* Design, build and maintain hardware such as servers FC / iSCSI SANs to create private clouds for dedicated customers.

* Plan and implement future developments, such as systems upgrades, using detailed plans and scheduled upgrade or implementation cycles.

* Debug network routing and switching.

* Maintain anti-virus, backup, and other management software on Windows/Linux systems.

* Maintain security and patch management on all hosted and customer systems.

* Participate in a 24x7x365 on-call rotation.

Windows technologies : Windows 2003-2012, Exchange 2010+ in a multi-tenant, multi server environment, IIS, Microsoft SQL 2005 through 2012, Sharepoint, Hyper-V, System Centre, DPM, VMM, SCOM, SCCM

Responsibilities

The role would have the following responsibilities:

Deal with customer’s queries via phone, email, and instant messaging like platform
Deal with customer queries as above in any language the candidate is fluent in (other than English).
Act on requests from other departments within the company.
Requests and queries usually relate to technical issues customers have with setting up email account and their websites through the control panels we offer.
Flexible working hours may be required, including weekend work.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

While no experience or education in the IT or Computers area is required, an interest or proficiency in general computer use would be essential.

Applicant must be interested and eager to learn more about the Hosting / domain industry.

Preferred Skills

Experience with dealing with the general public in a previous job role would be ideal.

Familiarity with the Windows and Linux operating systems, Apple OSX, and general shell commands like “grep”, would be preferred also but are not essential.

Good communications skills and punctuality are essential

Knowledge of a language other than English would be advantageous, though not necessary.

Location

Our head office is based in Carlow, but we have offices in Dublin. All successful applicants would need to complete initial training in Carlow.

Starting Salary Range:
23.5k to 27.5k
